We have to acknowledge the role of the colour in the city, we have to understand the importance of it and accept the commitment which is the duty of everybody who participates in the process of construction in an urban environment. It is important to understand that the colour in the city means much more then the simple application of it in the urban physiognomy and that by doing it we are participating in the definition of the urban vital space. Colour is a cultural fact and we perceive it as it is with all the culture. In general during the course of history man has used colours and structures of the Natural stone trying to obtain “a coloured result” in the work of architecture. These “results” are due to different motivations and have different functions, mainly symbolical (primitive, abstract, decorative) and communicative (revealing, descriptive, exalting, contextualist, etc.). Even if in reality we use the colour only as a shaping help to organize, underline, enhance, stimulate or to revaluate an architectural work, without being conscious of the environmental phenomenon that it produces, we can without knowing waste all its properties. An element that is abstract and descriptive at the same time can give richness to the shape of the space giving it a bigger meaning and it can increase the identifying, experiencing content and the visual orientation of a city. For this reason we can finish by saying that the colour is a decisive element of the urban identity. |
