EXTERIOR COATINGS OF NATURAL STONE

Saturday, May 12, 2007
The utilization of the stone is nowadays expanding. It is part of the design and an innovation sample in new buildings and urban areas.
Consumer.

The stone is a material not as revolutionary as the titan but in reality is the material that mostly gives sobriety, singularity and guarantees to last in time in the construction of houses and buildings.

Rocks are the result of a geological development process which lasted millions of years and depending on the minerals composing them and the conditions they have been exposed to, rocks are different in kind, sharpness and colour.

Rocks mainly stand out for their resistance and good results in exterior coatings.

In nowadays market we can find marbles, granites, sandstones, limestones, basalts, etc. but not all these materials are suitable for all applications.  The industry investigate and looks for the natural stones and structures that best fit in appearance and functionality, depending on their final destination.

GOOD INSULATION

The function of the natural stone is to keep a good thermal, acoustic and humidity insulation. Its efficiency in this field is considerable but depends on the characteristics and the type of rock selected as well as its layers and its placement procedures.

The properties of the natural stone are of a great value. Besides its hardness and resistance, the sobriety it offers in any building stands out.

The stone can be appreciated in the urban environment in shape of facades coatings, paving, dripstones, skirting boards, fountains, shields, arches, sculptures and other elements included in the funerary art.

TYPES AND CHARACTERISTICS

For its inherent physical conditions, the natural stone bears very well the atmospheric harshness and the action of the human being.Using whichever variety as element in a construction ends up in granting it a large life.

Lots of possibilities: quartz rocks, phyllite, slate, sandstone, granite, gneiss, marble, basalt, limestone,…The result depends on the layout of the shades and the different textures.

Materials of the most different colours and characteristics give the stone industry unlimited possibilities.

Unfortunately not all materials are fit for all applications. Each material that is placed to cover or decorate the facades as well as the interior or exterior decoration has to comply with some technical specifications.

Quality CE Marking of natural stone tiles  for exterior paving is compulsory since October 1st 2003.

Something “very important” is the search of materials which can fit each use.
